Is Homeopathy Effective For Treating Neurological Disorders?
Neurological Disorder Symptoms & Diagnosis
A neurological disorder (long term) is a range of conditions affecting the brain or spinal cord which occur due to
• Sudden onset conditions (acquired brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury)
• Intermittent conditions ( epilepsy)
• Progressive condition ( Multiple sclerosis, Motor neuron disease, Parkinsons, Huntington’s disease)
• Stable condition with/without age-related degeneration (polio, cerebral palsy)
A neurological condition may not be life-threatening but it can have a significant impact on everyday life (social, work & Psychological) and on participation in activities. In children affected by ADHD, autism, dyslexia or any number of neurobehavioral disorders, it is clear that what finally manifests represents the conspiracy of multiple events. Therefore pursuing a multifaceted therapeutic approach is gaining importance in the treatment of neurological disorders in adults & children. Non-traditional approaches to neurological interventions in the Alternative and Complementary Therapies have been popular and include the movement approach, energy approach, and physical body system approaches etc.
Homeopathy is focused on the assessment of each person as an individual rather than advising the exact same approach and treatment for all patients diagnosed with the neurological disorder. This patient-centered approach is reassuring to many patients and therapists too who rely on evidence-based practice. It offers reassurance that interventions will be safe, effective and proved to have worked elsewhere
It is a condition in which a person has recurrent seizures due to a chronic underlying process. Theory behind epilepsy is that during seizures, large groups of neurons are activated repetitively and hypersyncronously and failure of inhibitory synaptic contact between neurons. Causes for epilepsy are injury, poisoning, cerebral anoxia, helminthic manifestation, cerebral tumors etc. Symptoms are brief loss of consciousness with or without loss of postural control, uncontrollable jerking movement of the arms and legs, body stiffening and shaking, biting of tongue etc.
Treatment includes some medicines like Calcarea Carbonica, Bufo Rana, Cupurum Metallicum, Oenanthe Crocata, Kali Brom, Causticum etc. which help in managing the symptoms of epilepsy.
2. BELL’S PALSY
Bell’s palsy is a condition that causes a temporary weakness or paralysis of the muscles in the face. It can occur when the nerve that controls your facial muscles becomes inflamed, swollen, or compressed. Bell’s palsy occurs when the seventh cranial nerve becomes swollen or compressed, resulting in facial weakness or paralysis. The exact cause of this damage is unknown, but many medical researchers believe it’s most likely triggered by a viral infection. The symptoms of Bell’s palsy can develop one to two weeks after you have a cold, ear infection, or eye infection. They usually appear abruptly, and you may notice them when you wake up in the morning or when you try to eat or drink. Bell’s palsy is marked by a droopy appearance on one side of the face and the inability to open or close your eye on the affected side. In rare cases, Bell’s palsy may affect both sides of your face. Homoeopathic has a good scope for managing the symptoms of BPH.
Some are the medicines are Hypericum, Causticum, Gelsemium etc. but medicine is prescribed on the basis of individualization and as per the totality of symptoms.
Sciatica is a symptom of a problem with the sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the body. It controls muscles in the back of your knee and lower leg and provides feeling to the back of your thigh, part of your lower leg, and the sole of your foot. When sciatica occurs, pain, weakness, numbness, or tingling are the common symptoms. It can start in the lower back and extend down your leg to your calf, foot, or even your toes. It’s usually on only one side of your body.
Along with management homeopathic medicines are effective in treating the cases of sciatica are Hypericum, Magnesium Phosphoricum, Colocynthis, Gnaphalium, etc. but it depends upon the individual patient.
4. TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA
Trigeminal neuralgia is characterized by excruciating paroxysms of pain in the lips, gums, cheek, or chin and, very rarely, in the distribution of the ophthalmic division of the fifth nerve. The pain seldom lasts more than a few seconds or a minute or two but maybe so intense the patient winces. The paroxysm, experienced as single jabs or clusters, tend to recur frequently, both day and night, for several weeks at a time. They may occur spontaneously or with movements of affected areas evoked by speaking, chewing, or smiling. Another characteristic feature is the presence of trigger zones, typically on the face, lips, or tongue, that provoke attacks; patients may report that tactile stimuli-e.g. washing the face, brushing the teeth, or exposure to a draft of air- generate excruciating pain.
Compression or other pathology in the fifth cranial nerve leads to demyelization of large myelinated fibers that do not themselves carry pain sensation but become hyperexcitable and electrically couples with smaller unmyelinated or poorly myelinated pain fibers in close proximity; this may explain why tactile stimuli, conveyed via the large myelinated fibers, can stimulate paroxysms of pain.
Commonly used homeopathic medicines for trigeminal neuralgia are Rhus Tox, Colocynth, kali. Carb, Phosphorus, Nux Vomica and Passiflora.
